Many people who visit Indonesia go to Bali at the end of their trip. I can’t blame them. It’s the perfect place to relax, soak in the sun, enjoy gorgeous beaches, get close to the local traditions and pamper yourself.
Bali is famous for its gorgeous resorts, unique culture, healthy food options (there’s an abundance of great restaurants in Ubud), yoga retreats and – last, but absolutely not least – for its spas.
Having one (or more) spa treatments is definitely one of the best things to do in Seminyak, Ubud or anywhere in Bali really. You’ll usually find all the main beauty treatments on offer – waxing, facials, hair care, manicure, pedicure and the like, as well as traditional Balinese and hot stone massages.
However, with so many options, it’s hard to decide on a spa. But worry not! I have selected what I think are the top Bali spas, all over the island. Some of them are located in hotels, others are independent, but all of them offer the most amazing treatments.
The Best Spas in Bali – Ubud
Ubud is probably the loveliest city in Bali, one that definitely deserves a visit. It has retained much of its character despite the presence of many expats, and all around it there’s some amazing rice fields, part of the cultural landscape of Bali that also is UNESCO heritage.
Here you can find our guide to the best things to do in Ubud. The city has an incredible range of good hotels and resorts, upscale restaurants for any taste, and – quite obviously – some of the best spas in Bali.
1) Royal Kirana Spa
Royal Kirana Spa is located in Ubud, right next to the Royal Pita Maha, a really excellent luxury hotel. One of the reasons I think it’s one of the best spa options in Bali is its location: right against the Ayung River Valley, far from the main road (and the terrible traffic), overlooking the gorgeous terrace fields Ubud is famous for.
Once inside, the place is simply stunning: cobblestoned footpaths go through a beautiful, lush garden. The treatment villas all have a private pool and a jacuzzi, showers, and a relaxation nook.
The best treatment here is the Royal Retreat, which includes a massage, facials, use of the facilities in the village, and a meal. No doubt one of the ultimate Bali spa experiences!
2) The Spa at Maya
Maya Ubud has not one, but two spa complexes. It is located in the highlands of Ubud, and the spa by the riverside definitely deserves a visit. Upon arriving, guests walk along wooden riverside boardwalks to get to the treatment area. All the while, and throughout the treatment, they can hear the sound of the Petanu River below.
Among the best treatments, we recommend the two-hour River Breeze package which includes a massage, a body mask, and a body lotion. Other packages include baths in copper tubs. There are also packages for couples and honeymooners.
3) The Spa at Padma Resort
Padma Resort is a great place to stay in Ubud, away from the beaten track. The spa is a fabulous, sophisticated place where anybody ends up experiencing what the therapists call “inner bliss.”
Treatments go from traditional Balinese massages to facials using top-quality products and modern techniques. We recommend the 3-hour Pure Indulgence experience, including a body scrub, milk bath, herbal massage and a facial.
The products used are simply fabulous, and the treatment rooms are incredibly stylish, with views over the rice fields.
4) The Sanctoo Spa
The Sanctoo Resort is definitely worth visiting for the incredible Sanctoo Spa, which has a fantastic series of wellness and beauty programs to rejuvenate the body and mind.
The aim at Sanctoo is to connect people with nature, to bring them back to what the therapists call “nature of soul” – which is characterized by love, peace, happiness, humbleness, and purity.
This is done using the healing power of human hands and body energy. Massages and facial treatments are done using high-quality products for optimum results. The hot stone massage we had was just excellent, and if you truly want to treat yourself you can also combine it with a black tea and sorghum facial.
5) Visesa Balinese Healing Spa
Located in Visesa Ubud Resort, which is by far one of the best places to stay in Ubud, this is the ultimate Bali spa, a place to get blissfully pampered and to have a fabulous, holistic healing experience.
The spa uses the principles of Bali Usada in its treatments, the Balinese equivalent of ayurvedic medicine, including the use of plants, herbs, and spices. You’ll find a selection of massages on offer, including Balinese, aromatherapy and deep tissue massage, but what makes this Bali spa unique is that you can opt to have all treatments into a natural cave!
6) Taksu Wellness Center
Taksu is a beautiful spa, and one of the few not connected to a hotel or resort. For this reason, it’s one of the most affordable spas in Ubud.
The environment is tropical, quiet, soothing – a place to relax and feel completely peaceful. There’s also a great selection of treatments on offer, including the usual traditional Balinese and hot stone massages but also Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi, lymphatic and full-body Esalen massages, as well as the opportunity to enjoy another unique Bali activity – flower baths!
To top this off, there are some incredible dining options, which include raw vegan, sushi, and baked goods. In other words, it is heavenly.
7) Jaens Spa Shanti
Another day spa, affordable and very popular just like Taksu, Jaens Spa is located 10 minutes away from the center of Ubud.
Therapists use a blend of ancient remedies and modern spa rituals to help guests feel healthier and improve their overall wellbeing. The products used are a blend of natural ingredients, oils, herbs and spices that are simply fabulous.
A really interesting treatment you can enjoy here is the synchronicity massage, performed by two therapists at the same time. On the spa menu you’ll also find hair treatments, facials and packages combining all of the above!
The Best Spas in Bali – Seminyak and Kuta
Seminyak is the most famous beach area of Bali, packed with great resorts, restaurants of all kinds, great shopping opportunities and, quite obviously, the ultimate Bali spas.
Next door you’ll find Kuta, a lot busier and more chaotic than Seminyak, but still offering some good spa options.
8) Prana Spa
If Seminyak is somewhat hectic, Prana allows you to escape from it all. The architecture is what makes this place worth visiting, inspired by the atmosphere of India and the Middle East. The treatments are also excellent, which obviously is a great bonus!
The trademark treatment at Prana is the Shirodhara, which means “head flow” and is a typical Ayurvedic treatment. It begins with a massage to the head, scalp, neck and shoulder, followed by pouring medicinal oils.
The treatment is particularly recommended for those suffering with headaches or insomnia – I don’t, but I can definitely do with some relaxation. Next time I’m in Bali this will be my first stop!
9) Taman Air Spa
Taman Air Spa is located in Kuta, and it is one of the most popular day spas in Bali. In the chaos of Kuta, this spa is a real sanctuary where to get away from it all, get fully pampered and leave rejuvenated and relaxed both in the body and in the soul.
Treatments and massages make use of natural ingredients like coconut oil, avocado and moringa. A great package to choose is Miracle of Coconut, a 3-hour journey starting with a lemongrass foot bath followed by a Balinese massage, coconut scrub and coconut body wrap. Just heavenly!
10) Bali Orchid Spa
This is another popular day spa, also thanks to its unbeatable prices. It works according to the traditional local belief that body, mind and spirit ought to work in harmony, and that health and wellbeing lead to happiness.
The treatments at Bali Orchid Spa are aimed at healing, releasing tension, freeing the body of toxins and improving blood circulation. The staff uses natural and herbal medicines – ginger tea, lemon, etc – as they stimulate, soothe and revitalize the body.
The spa menu is really vast, and includes a variety of massages from both the East and West. The green tea anti-aging treatment is recommended, including a green tea body scrub followed by yogurt moisturizer which will leave your skin smooth and supple.
11) Theta Spa by The Sea
Located in the beautiful Bintang Bali Resort – one of the best places to stay in Kuta – the main feature of this spa is the stunning sea view.
It is set in a quiet, peaceful environment, perfect for a massage to increase wellbeing and relaxation. Treatments have evocative names like “Selamat Datang”, meaning good morning in Bahasa Indonesia, including a coffee scrub and a tropical fruits body wrap that will leave you energized and ready to seize the day.
The Best Spas in Bali – Jimbaran
Jimbaran is home to some of the best beaches in Bali, and it’s a great access point to explore the Bukit peninsula where you’ll find the famous Uluwatu cliffs and some great surfing beaches – plus two really excellent spas.
12) Butter & Scrub Spa
Bali Paragon Hotel is one of the best places to stay in Jimbaran. If the hotel is lovely, the spa is reason enough to visit, both for the quality of treatments and for its beauty.
It is the perfect place for guests to pamper themselves, to get healthier skin with beauty treatments and feel relaxed and rejuvenated. One of the signature treatments is a massage that is supposed to relieve the effects of jet lag. I always get jet lag, it hits me every time despite many years of travelling, so I guess I’d probably head for that treatment right away!
13) Hua Spa
The signature treatment at this spa uses frangipani flowers, which are supposed to instantly relieve stress and bring an overall feeling of peace and relaxation.
The treatment starts with a foot bath in orange blossom fragrance, which is then followed by a massage using frangipani body scrub and body mask. I love frangipani, so this is enough to make me say this is one of the best spas in Bali.
Other Fabulous Bali Spas
14) Visala Spa, Legian
Visala Spa has 3 venues, all in the Legian area and all beautiful, modern, clean and very affordable. The Visala at the Magani Hotel, for example, has four massage treatment rooms, as well as male and female saunas.
The treatment menu has a lot of options – you can also opt for singing bowl therapy for ultimate relaxation!
15) The Spa at the Edge, Uluwatu
The Edge is one of the best resorts to stay in Uluwatu, and its spa is fabulous. It faces a stunning sea cliff, with views of the ocean stretching for miles. Just this would be enough to make it the best spa in Bali.
The treatment rooms are out of this world, with floor-to-ceiling windows and floors covered with a thin layer of water, giving you the feeling of being on the beach. It’s the perfect setting for the signature Oceanic ritual, with a Vichy shower and a massage inspired by the movement of the waves.
16) The Spa at Bulgari Resort, Uluwatu
The name Bulgari should be enough to get your interest. This spa is set in one of the most luxurious resorts in Bali, and the experience is really out of this world.
The spa is set on a cliff top, with fabulous, luxury treatments such as Balinese four-hand massages, hot stone massages, facials and more. However, if you truly wish to spoil yourself you should opt for the Bulgari Royal Lulur ritual, held in an exclusive pavilion, including a Javanese lulur scrub with rice powder and spices, a seaweed mask, facial and Balinese massage. 3 hours of pure bliss!
17) Soori
Soori is one of Bali’s best kept secrets! This wonderful luxury resort is in Tabanan on Bali’s west coast, not far from Tanah Lot temple, and offers accommodation in independent villas overlooking the ocean or rice paddies.
The spa is simply wonderful – imagine softly lit interiors, dark sandstone and tiles, and a series of treatments that mix Asian and Western traditions. To top this off, Soori uses its special line of “natural active” spa products.
The spa villas all have their own entrance, with a special herbal steam shower and bathtub and even an individually controlled sound system. Opt for the signature Spirit of Soori massage, or try the abdominal chi massage, rarely found but deeply relaxing.
18) Espace Spa, Canggu
The Espace is an affordable and popular Bali day spa, located in Canggu, Bali’s ‘digital nomad’ capital.
The environment is cozy and warm, the atmosphere elegant, and the treatments fantastic. Body massages have a relaxing, rejuvenating effect and are done using natural products. The overall effect is a fantastic reduction of stress – a great way to spend a day in Bali!
